What are some technical questions asked during an interview in a core electrical engineering company?
I recollect some questions so that it will helpful to other electrical aspirants:
1. What is your B. Tech project?
1.1 Tell us the principle of project.
1.2 Draw the circuit diagram on the (i.e. White board available in the interview room).
1.3 Ratings of the components used.
1.4 Units of electrical parameters.
1.5 Latest applications of project.
1.6 Uniqueness of project.
2. Write your favorite five subject (electrical) on white board.
I wrote electrical power system, electrical machines, electrical networks, electrical and electronics measurements and control systems, because I prepared those subjects very thoroughly. You can write as per your choice in the interview time.
3. Panel members started with electrical power systems concepts:
3.1 Draw single line diagram of power system.
3.2 Ratings of transformers (at generation station, Transmission side and receiving side), Connections (star or delta), substation components, positions of Isolators, circuit breakers, earth switch during normal condition.
3.3 Which circuit breaker (CB) preferred for different voltage levels in power system, basic working diagram of CB, medium used in CB, arc formation in CB, ratings of CB (Breaking, making, short time rating with waveform).
3.4 Earthing used in electrical system, where to used resistance and reactance grounding? Some questions related to Peterson Coil.
3.5 Small, medium, long transmission line diagram.
3.6 HVDC v/s HVAC.
4. Electrical Machine:
4.1 Classify the motors.
4.2 Starter used in Induction motor
4.3 Why starters use in DC machines
4.4 Draw transformer phasor configuration (i.e. star-delta 0, star-delta 6).
4.5 Compensation winding, interpoles in DC machine.
4.6 Problems on Starting current calculations (Induction 3 phase machine) and which starter will prefer as per starting current of machine.
4.7 Parallel operating conditions for generator to synchronize with power grid.
4.8 Harmonics in Induction, Crawling, Cogging.
5. Electrical Networks:
5.1 Basics theorems related questions. (Norton’s, Thevenin’s, MPT)
5.2 KCL, KVL based numerical.
5.3 RLC series and parallel circuits.
6. Electrical and electronic measurement:
6.1 CT, PT (principle, applications, ratings, diagram), what is mean by bourdon?
6.2 Ammeter, voltmeter, wattmeter related basic questions.
7. Control Systems:
No questions asked from this subject.
They asked me some advanced questions related to Power electronics, as I prepared only basic concepts, so I politely answer not prepared for that much level. So, they started some miscellaneous questions like Flemings left and right-hand rule, Chopper and inverter related basic questions, MOSFET v/s IGBT, Thyristor, DIAC, TRIAC, BJT operations (03 modes).
As I am working with one of Government organization, so they asked me about my profile.
During interview, panel members will try to comfort you and help you with some clue to reach to the answer. Read basic thoroughly understand concepts rather than memorizing.
!!BEST OF LUCK!!
